| A Merckx-Godefroot Classic in 1967
Brutally cold and rainy Ardennes weather greeted 125 starters for the 1967 Liege-Bastogne-Liege. Belgian's young and emerging superstar named Eddy Merckx came to Liege after winning the Fleche Wallonne three days earlier.
Merckx attacked relentlessly throughout the race. The final selection came when Merckx and Willy Monty escaped the peloton in the closing kms. Tough Belgian Walter Godefroot answer the attack and bridged to the breakaway duo. Merckx and Godefroot battle into Liege with Monty relenting to the attacks and fell off the pace.
Walter Godefroot used his superior sprint to pass the young Merckx and claim the prestigious L-B-L victory!
